When I had to give a preferred job location for my first job , I had given every other option except Chennai and hence it came as a surprise when I got posted in Chennai itself. With so much of presuppositions and ambiguity I had moved to Chennai in 2014 at the outset of a new career milestone. Some of my friends called the city a ‘black hole’ in jest ( Yet uncertain why they thought that I might end up in the city forever)
Unlike any other city , the first impression of Chennai had never been a great one for the expat crowd (as they say) and I can’t state a specific reason for that. Might be the hot and humid climate and it’s detriment to its settlers.
I had never been away from home for a longer period hence being in a city with a language similar to my mother tongue itself was a relief. My fellow friends from the North always made sure to use the words “Tamil theriyum” and “saapitacha” in the hope of a killer conversation with the Tamilians (though in reality it never happened) . But gradually they too gained a fair hold on the language. Even though the climate is a considerable hitch , the generous people in Chennai greets you with great delight and makes you feel like home.
There are so many elements which makes you forget any hassle here and gradually fall in love with the city.
Chennai , being close to the Bay of Bengal is a blessing for all beach lovers. When you pitch on a beach spot to hang out, the options are innumerable. The gripping part is that every beach offers a discrete aura to its seekers. I even have a custom made register in my head regarding the choice of beach to hit as per the nature of my periodic mood swings. That itself suggests the plethora of beach choices in Chennai.
Marina Beach : This sandy beach is always eventful with a tightly packed high spirited crowd as if it’s their last place or last day on the Earth! Marina reflects the soul of Chennai as it demonstrates the life of varied people unadulterated. Lying on the warm sand staring at the sky filled with sparkling stars in the moonlight at Marina could take you to a dream which is far ahead of your transient troubles ( only if the bustling people there had already slept exhausted!)
Besant Nagar : The lovely “Bessy“ ! The perfect beach choice for those who seek a romantic night accentuated by an enticing sea breeze . You could explore the diverse food-joints with scrumptious cuisines in Besant Nagar. Local adventure games similar to a carnival makes it a desirable outing spot for kids and family. The famous Karl Schmidt Memorial at Besant Nagar reminds the evergreen comedy scene of a classic Malayalam movie and could crack the same joke for every Keralite who makes a visit here.
An early morning stroll along the the bessy beach having an authentic breakfast at the Murugan Idli shop is enough to stir up a vibrant day.
Thiruvanmiyur beach: The beach reveals the essence of all other beaches in Chennai and is slightly secluded from the city. Popular for its mesmerising sunrise and sunset views. The calm and residential neighbourhood of the beach have a huge impact on the family crowd. Beach walkers and joggers along the promenade is a usual yet inspiring sight at Thiruvanmiyur beach.
This is my obvious choice of beach whenever I seek for a speck of solitude !(Basically my own moments to peek into other’s life )
ECR beach : A haven of sun , surf and sand where I hung out with my friends the most and hence ECR is linked with all those evocative memories. The vast range of beach resorts spread across ECR redefines luxury and indulgence for those who seek a perfect getaway!
Kovalam beach , Gandhi beach , Akkarai beach and the list is endless !
I miss being there on the beach when the tides crash onto me and lifts me to an elated trance.
